Birthday card
for a coworker
The office card that goes round the desks never reaches the remote half of the team. Make it online instead: a card the whole team signs through one invite link, with a team photo and a GIF, sent by Slack, Teams or text. Stuck on what to write? There are 30 lines below to start from.

What to write in a coworker's birthday card
Copy one as is, or use it as a start and add the one specific thing only you would say.
Simple and professional
For someone you work with but don't know that well. Warm, short, safe to read out loud.
- Happy birthday! Hope today is easy on the inbox and generous with the cake.
- Wishing you a great birthday and a year that's as good as your work.
- Happy birthday from all of us. Thanks for being so good to work with.
- Hope you get to log off early and celebrate properly. Happy birthday!
- Happy birthday! Here's to a year of interesting projects and short meetings.
Warm, for a work friend
For the person who makes the job better. Say the specific thing.
- Happy birthday to my favorite person to complain about Mondays with.
- Work would be about 40% more boring without you. Happy birthday!
- Thanks for every coffee run, every rescue and every 'did you see that email'. Happy birthday.
- You make the hard weeks bearable and the good weeks fun. Have the best birthday.
- Happy birthday! Lunch is on me this week, pick somewhere better than the usual.
Funny (but still HR-safe)
Teasing that stays kind. Aim the joke at work, not at them.
- Happy birthday! Per my last email, you're officially a year more experienced.
- Wishing you a birthday with zero meetings that could have been an email.
- Happy birthday! I've scheduled 30 minutes in your calendar to do absolutely nothing.
- Another year older and still the only one who knows how the printer works. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday! Let's circle back on how old you are. Never.
For your boss or manager
Appreciation, not flattery. Thank them for something real.
- Happy birthday! Thanks for having our backs, and for the way you run the team.
- Wishing you a great birthday. I've learned a lot working for you this year.
- Happy birthday from the whole team. We're lucky to have a manager who actually listens.
- Hope your birthday is relaxing. You've earned a day where nobody needs anything from you.
- Happy birthday! Thanks for making this a place people want to work.
For a remote coworker
When you've only ever seen them from the shoulders up.
- Happy birthday! Wishing I could hand you cake instead of a link. Next offsite, it's on me.
- Happy birthday to my favorite face on the Monday call.
- Sending a birthday card across a couple of time zones. Hope it's a great day where you are.
- Happy birthday! Your camera-off lunch break today is fully approved.
- Different cities, same team. Happy birthday from all of us.
From the whole team
For the line at the top of a group card, before everyone's own messages.
- Happy birthday from your favorite team (we checked, you don't get a vote).
- From all of us: happy birthday, and thanks for making the work better.
- The whole team got together on this one. Happy birthday!
- Happy birthday from everyone who's ever been helped by you. So, everyone.
- We couldn't agree on a gift, but we all agreed on this: happy birthday.

Common questions
What do you write in a birthday card for a coworker?
Keep it short, warm and specific. A happy birthday, one sentence about something real (a project they saved, the coffee runs, how they are in meetings), and a nice wish for the year. Skip age jokes and anything you wouldn't say in front of their manager.
Can the whole team sign one card?
Yes. One person makes the card, then gets an invite link from the card's page and posts it in a Slack thread or Teams chat the birthday person isn't in. Everyone adds their own message on a sticky note, with no account, and the birthday person gets all of them inside one card. Up to 100 people can sign.
How do I send it at work?
Paste the card link in a Slack or Teams DM, an email, or a text. It opens in the browser on their laptop or phone, with no app, account or login. If it's a surprise, post it in the team channel the moment they log on.
Is it OK to send a coworker a funny birthday card?
Yes, if the joke is about work rather than about them. 'Another year of meetings that could have been emails' is safe. Jokes about age, looks or their personal life are not, especially from a group.
What do you write in a birthday card for your boss?
Thank them for something concrete, like how they handled a hard month, backing the team or what you've learned from them, and wish them a good day off. Appreciation lands better than flattery, and a group card from the team takes the awkwardness out of it.
Is an online birthday card free?
Yes. The card, your message, up to two surprises (a GIF, a photo, a note or a gift link) and two signers are free. A whole team's worth of signatures, a group gift amount or a voice note make it a Birthday Boost card, which is a single one-time upgrade for the card, not per person.
Can we add a group gift?
Yes. Add a gift card link (Amazon, Starbucks, DoorDash) that opens from inside the card, or show the amount everyone chipped in with the money reveal. The money itself goes through whatever app your team uses.
